Ghana tech news: Ghanaians to get more Data for same price from July 1. The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George has announced that beginning July 1, 2025 all the three telcos in the country will increase all of their data bundles by a margins of between 10 and 15% a the same prices customers are paying now.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference, the Minister said AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana will each increase all of their data bundles by 10% while MTN Ghana will increase theirs by 15%.

In addition to that across board increases in data bundles on all three network, the Minister said each of telcos are all restoring one specific affordable data package each, which were highly patronized by content creators and students of tertiary institutions for their research.

According to the GHS400 bundle on AT Ghana will go up from 195GB to 236GB, while on Telecel Ghana, the GHS400 bundle will go up from 190GB to 250GB, and on MTN the GHS399 bundle for 182GB, which was originally replaced with a GHS350 for 92.88GB, will go up to GHS399 for 214GB.

Data Prices

Whereas the news of the increases in data packages was received with applause even at the press conference, it still remains that the main complaint from Ghanaians is about data prices and not necessarily the volume of data.

In that regard, Sam George stated that taxes on data packages in Ghana is up to 39%, and that contributes greatly to the price of data. He is therefore negotiating with the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to cut down some of the taxes on data packages so that the savings could be transferred to consumers in the form actual reduction in data prices.

The Minister said he is also negotiating with the Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), to grant telcos a special regime of power tariff called “telecom tariff”, just like the mining industry has a “mining tariff” regime, which is less than the regular tariff.

According to him, if that is also done, it will help telcos cut down on their operational expenses, and therefore be in a position to reduce data prices even further.

Quality of Service

But if Ghanaians get very affordable data and the quality of service is poor, the data will remain useless and possibly expire before customers are able to use it.

Sam George said, beyond the data packages, government also has its eyes on quality for service and has therefore urged all telcos to invest a at least US$150 million into their improving their networks to ensure Ghanaians get the quality they need to enjoy the data they buy.

Indeed, government has given MTN and Telecel additional spectrum which they are preparing to pay for by July 2025 and rollout within the third quarter of the year. Government has also granted approval for Telecel to be granted an entity connectivity license to access the 2.1GHz spectrum resources on the shared 4G/5G network run by Next Generation Infrastructure Company (NGIC), to improve their quality of service.

The Minister said with all these resources and directives made available to the telcos, they are expected to improve quality of service immensely by the fourth quarter of the year, and if they fail, the regulator, National Communications Authority (NCA) has been directed to apply full sanctions, which will be a combination of fines and compensations for consumers.

He assured Ghanaians that his heart is with them and he serve them with “heart, sweat and blood”.
